NORTHERN RENAISSANCE

Gardner's art through the ages pages

THINGS THAT impacted art

15th Century

Continuation of Gothic idea of Humanism when it comes

to religious imagery.  Also the idea of Naturalism, tying in an increased interest and study of science and the natural world as it actually appears.

Secularization of culture leads to varied subject matter.

Growth of Capitalism, banking, and urbanization a.k.a.

the growth of Market Economies leads to a lot of

new patrons of the arts.  Not only the church and royalty as patrons.

Printmaking becomes an art form.

The Guttenberg press (1456) makes the creation of numerous images and mass distribution of less expensive works relatively easy.

16th Century

Protestant Reformation - In 1517 Martin Luther posts

the 95 Theses condemning the Church's practices, and will wide distribution of pamphlets, the Reformation occurs.
