ITALY 1300-1399

the proto renaissance

ILLUSIONARY FORM in figures

Chiaroscuro - Using light and shadows to show how light hits an object

Definition - Boundaries between/around figures

Figure Ground Relationship - Unlike Byzantine work, people are weighted to the ground.  Cues such as shadows, flat feet, and a relationship to the environment ground the figure in the environment

Foreshortening - Things that are closer are larger and sometimes distorted due to perspective

Modeling - Making figures look like 3-D forms

ILLUSIONARY SPACE in environments

Atmospheric Perspective - As space recedes (further away) it loses definition and darkest/lightest values.  Gets more hazy looking.

Figure Ground Relationship - Objects are held down by gravity and have a relationship with their environment.  Shadows help establish that.

Linear Perspective - Straight lines converging to vanishing point(s).  1-point & 2-point perspective

Overlap - Things that are closer are in front of those that are further away

Position - Placement of things that are further away higher up on the picture plane.

Scale - Closer objects are larger than objects that are further away.  The relative size of things.
