1517 - Martin Luther posts his 95 Theses and starts the Protestant Reformation

1527 - Making figures look like 3-D forms 

1534 - Henry VIII separates the English Church

CONTEXT

Art as Metaphor - Patrons use art to push political views, demonstrate position and power. Artists use it to instill their own views and advance their ego.  Shows philosophical ideas within religious works and convey their vision. 

Artist as Genius - Rock star artists were revered as divine.  Michelangelo, Raphael, and daVinci

Monumental Scale - Painting & Sculptural programs and architecture are grandiose

Rome - Cultural and Religious Capitol

Papal Power - Popes Julius II and Leo X were political and had cultural ambitions

Venice - Oil and mosaics used here due to high humidity.  Frescos would rot or fall off walls.
